Gifted and Talented Education at Clairvaux MacKillop College

Nurturing Excellence, Encouraging Growth

At Clairvaux MacKillop College, we believe every student is capable of remarkable achievement. For students who demonstrate advanced abilities, rapid learning, or exceptional creativity, we provide targeted opportunities that challenge, extend, and inspire them to reach their full potential.

Our approach is grounded in the College's Catholic values and the charisms of St Mary MacKillop and Edmund Rice. We aim to cultivate not only academic excellence but also character, compassion, and a lifelong love of learning.

What Does “Gifted and Talented" Mean?

Gifted and talented students may show high potential in one or more areas, including:

  • Intellectual or academic ability
  • Creative or critical thinking
  • Leadership
  • Social–emotional insight
  • Specific subject strengths (e.g., Mathematics, English, Science, the Arts)

These students often learn at a faster pace, think more deeply, or require greater complexity in their learning experiences.

Identification of High-Ability Learners

Gifted and Talented education at the College, is modelled on Gagné's Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent (DMGT), one of the most widely recognised and research‑supported frameworks in gifted education.

Key principles of DMGT reflected in the College's approach include:

  • Giftedness refers to natural abilities or potential.
  • Talent refers to systematically developed skills in specific domains.
  • Developmental processes, including quality teaching, enrichment, and mentoring, help transform potential into high performance.
  • Environmental catalysts, such as school culture and specialist programs, play a critical role in talent development.

Clairvaux MacKillop College uses a holistic, ongoing identification process to recognise students who may benefit from additional challenge. Evidence may include:

  • Standardised testing (e.g., NAPLAN, PAT, school-based assessments)
  • Classroom performance and work samples
  • Teacher observations of advanced thinking or creativity
  • Parent/carer insights
  • Student self-nomination
  • External assessments or specialist reports

Identification is not a one-time event. Students may be recognised at any stage of their schooling as their abilities and learning needs evolve.
